Colorado has four national parks and several national monuments managed by the National Park Service. Rocky Mountain gets the crowds, and we cover it separately in our Rocky Mountain camping guide. The rest are scattered across the southern and western parts of the state, and most make excellent two- or three-night camping trips. Here is how camping works at each.
Mesa Verde National Park
Mesa Verde protects thousands of Ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites, including the famous cliff dwellings, on a high mesa near Cortez in southwest Colorado. The park's only campground is Morefield, a few miles inside the entrance.
- OperatorManaged by the park concessioner, Aramark, which takes camping reservations through its own website rather than Recreation.gov.
- SeasonOpen from spring into fall; Morefield and most park facilities close in winter.
- RV sitesThe NPS notes a small number of full-hookup RV sites, for which reservations are recommended.
- Evening programsRanger programs at the campground amphitheater generally run from around Memorial Day through mid-August.
Cliff dwelling tours are separate from camping and require tickets on Recreation.gov. Book tours as soon as your dates are set, since they can sell out.
Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve
The tallest dunes in North America rise against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the San Luis Valley. Camping here means sand underfoot, wind, superb night skies and, in early summer, the seasonal flow of Medano Creek.
- Pinon Flats CampgroundReservation only on Recreation.gov or 877-444-6777; individual and group sites open up to three months in advance; no first-come sites.
- SeasonThe park lists Pinon Flats as open April 1 through October 31.
- Peak demandExpect every site to be reserved during Medano Creek's peak flow in early summer; the park suggests weekday visits.
- BackcountryPermits are required for camping in the national park's dunes backcountry and trail camps. Backpacking in the national preserve does not require a permit.
Sand and wind
Afternoon winds in spring can be fierce, and dune surfaces can get extremely hot on summer afternoons. Stake tents well, guy them out, and plan dune hikes for morning or evening.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
The Gunnison River has cut a narrow canyon more than 2,000 feet deep through dark, ancient rock east of Montrose. The park has two rim campgrounds and a third at river level.
- South RimNormally reservable on Recreation.gov. After the 2025 South Rim Fire, a limited number of non-electric sites reopened for camping between May 18 and September 30, 2026, and some areas remained closed.
- North RimFirst-come, first-served, paid through Recreation.gov's Scan and Pay app feature.
- East PortalReached by a steep road from the South Rim; technically inside Curecanti National Recreation Area; upper sites first-come, with the same payment system.
- CashlessThe park has been cashless since April 2025.
Overnight hiking or kayaking in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison Wilderness requires a wilderness use permit. Inner-canyon routes are steep, unmaintained and serious; read the park's guidance carefully.
Colorado National Monument
Above Grand Junction and Fruita, Colorado National Monument's Rim Rock Drive winds past sheer red canyons and towering monoliths. Its only established campground, Saddlehorn, sits near the visitor center four miles from the west entrance.
- SitesThree loops, A, B and C, reserved through Recreation.gov.
- BookingThe park has used a mix of six-month, two-week and same-day reservation windows.
- LimitsNo vehicles over 40 feet including tow vehicle and trailer; no electric hookups, dump station or showers.
- SeasonDesert heat makes spring and fall the most comfortable seasons.
Dinosaur National Monument
Dinosaur straddles the Colorado and Utah border where the Green and Yampa rivers carve deep canyons. The NPS says three of its campgrounds are on the Utah side, including Green River near the Quarry Exhibit Hall, and three are on the Colorado side, including Gates of Lodore at the head of the Canyon of Lodore near Maybell. The Colorado-side campgrounds are remote and primitive compared with the Utah side. Check the NPS campgrounds page for seasons, water availability and road conditions, which can make some areas impassable when wet.
Planning across the parks
| Park | Main campground | How to book | Best seasons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesa Verde | Morefield | Concessioner (Aramark) | Late spring, early fall |
| Great Sand Dunes | Pinon Flats | Recreation.gov, 3 months ahead | Late spring, fall |
| Black Canyon | South Rim | Recreation.gov; rims also first-come | Summer, early fall |
| Colorado National Monument | Saddlehorn | Recreation.gov, mixed windows | Spring, fall |
| Dinosaur (Colorado side) | Gates of Lodore and others | See NPS page | Late spring to fall |
Remember that national park entrance fees apply in addition to camping fees, and an America the Beautiful pass covers entrance at these parks but not Colorado state parks. For the strategy side of booking, see our reservations guide.
Frequently asked questions
How do you reserve camping at Mesa Verde?
Morefield Campground is operated by the park concessioner, Aramark, which also runs Far View Lodge. Reservations are made through the concessioner rather than Recreation.gov. The campground is seasonal, open from spring into fall and closed in winter.
Can you camp at Great Sand Dunes without a reservation?
Not at Pinon Flats Campground, where all sites are by reservation on Recreation.gov and can be booked up to three months ahead. Backpackers can get permits for the national park's backcountry, and backpacking in the national preserve does not require a permit.
Is the Black Canyon of the Gunnison South Rim campground open in 2026?
Partly. After the 2025 South Rim Fire, a limited number of non-electric sites reopened for reservable camping from May 18 to September 30, 2026. The North Rim and East Portal campgrounds are first-come, first-served with payment through Recreation.gov's Scan and Pay.
Do national park campsites in Colorado have hookups?
Mostly not. Morefield at Mesa Verde has a small number of full-hookup RV sites, and the Black Canyon's South Rim has had electric sites, though not in the 2026 reopening. Saddlehorn at Colorado National Monument has no hookups, dump station or showers and cannot fit vehicles longer than 40 feet.
