How we research

Camping rules carry real consequences, from citations to wildfires. These are the standards we hold ourselves to.

Revised 10 October 2026

Agency sources first

For any rule about where and how you may camp, the managing agency is the authority. We build each guide from National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and Colorado Parks and Wildlife pages, orders and fact sheets, plus Recreation.gov listings. For fire restrictions we add the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control and county sources. Safety guidance comes from the National Weather Service, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Leave No Trace. When a news outlet reports a change before an agency page is updated, we may cite the report and say so.

Fees, site counts and dates

Campground fees, number of sites, booking windows and season dates change every year and sometimes mid-season. Our policy:

  • We do not invent or estimate fees or site counts.
  • When we state a date, rule or number, it comes from an official or reputable source, and we say what season it applies to.
  • When sources disagree, we point that out and recommend the official listing.
  • For anything likely to change, we link to the page that will stay current.

Rules versus advice

We try to separate legal requirements, such as stay limits, permit zones and fire orders, from good practice, such as choosing a campsite away from dead trees. Where a rule varies by forest or district, we give examples and tell you to check the specific area.

No fabricated experience

We do not publish invented reviews, ratings, visitor quotes or claims of first-hand stays. Recommendations describe what a place offers based on agency information and well-documented features.

Keeping pages current

We review guides ahead of the summer booking season, the start of fire season and the fall hunting and winter seasons. Each page shows its last update. Corrections from readers are welcome through our contact page and are verified before we change a page.

Independence

Colorado Camping Spots is published by Eye To Ad Media. Advertising may appear on the site, but advertisers have no input into our guides, and we do not sell rankings. See about us for more.
